Description
Southern fried apples are distinguished not only as a dish but as an experience. Their rich, buttery texture combined with deep caramelized flavors makes them a comforting complement to any meal.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 large apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Golden Delicious are recommended)
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- ½ cup of brown sugar, either light or dark depending on your taste preference
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon nutmeg (optional, for additional warmth)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- A pinch of salt
- 2 tablespoons water (or apple juice for enhanced flavor)
Instructions
- Prepare the Apples: Begin by washing, peeling, coring, and slicing the apples into wedges approximately ¼-inch thick. Consistent slicing promotes even cooking.
- Melt the Butter: In a large skillet set over medium heat, melt the butter until it begins to foam.
- Cook the Apples: Introduce the apple slices to the skillet, stirring to ensure they are coated in butter. Allow them to cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Add the Sugar and Spices: Evenly sprinkle the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a small pinch of salt over the apples. Mix thoroughly to evenly distribute the spices.
- Simmer and Soften: Lower the heat to medium-low and add the water (or apple juice). Cover the skillet and let the apples simmer for an additional 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally until they are tender but not overly soft.
- Finish with Vanilla: Mix in the vanilla extract and cook for an additional minute to ensure the flavors meld together.
- Serve Warm: Remove from heat and serve immediately. Southern fried apples are best enjoyed warm and can be served alone or alongside biscuits, pancakes, pork chops, or even vanilla ice cream.
